What is Luft?

The folks behind Luftgekühlt describe it as an experiential car culture event centered around a tightly curated list of historically significant or interesting cars. I describe it as a gathering of the beautiful and mechanically impressive air cooled Porsches. The type that will make car enthusiasts not only turn heads, but have them considering a second mortgage and risking divorce just to get behind the wheel of one.

East Coast Debut

Luftgekühlt was originally slated to be hosted at the American Tobacco Campus in 2020, but was delayed due to the pandemic. To make up for it, the organizers didn’t hold back. They stuffed 911s in every nook and cranny of the 15-acre campus. Rumor has it they wanted to put one underneath the Old Bull sign, but they couldn’t find anyone with balls big enough to crane a classic onto the roof of the building.

The day before the event, I was lucky enough to witness the dance of organizing hundreds of cars to their assigned locations on campus. The crowds were quiet, the queueing cars were loud, and these moments before the event turned into my favorite photos.

Was this one of the coolest events I’ve ever had the chance to experience? Hell. Yes.

Growing up, I used to play Gran Turismo 3 and Need for Speed, surviving off Bagel Bites between races and dreaming about the red 911 race car poster on my wall. 24 years later, I’m still waiting for that Porsche to magically appear in my driveway. Until then, I’ll stick to taking photos and crushing Bagel Bites.
